HMS Portland F79 Type 23 Frigate December 2008 At Speed Photo Print
HMS Portland (F79), a Royal Navy Type 23 frigate, closed up at action stations and running the Bab el Mandeb Straits between Yemen and Djibouti on 7 December 2008, photographed from above her port bow. Sandbagged positions and their crews stand out on the forecastle, and spray bursts away from her stem on both sides. A brown smudge of haze lies along the horizon behind her.
She was working her way east of Suez that winter, lying at Souda Bay in Crete at the end of November and passing through the Suez Canal on 3 December before entering the Red Sea. The southern end of the Red Sea was treated as a potentially volatile stretch of water, which is why she ran it at speed with her upper deck weapons manned. Beyond the strait lay the Gulf of Aden, where the European Union's counter piracy mission, Operation Atalanta, was launched the day after this photograph was taken.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
