HMS Powerful 1895 Cruiser 1908 Photo Print
HMS Powerful, a Royal Navy cruiser, lies at anchor in quiet water in 1908, the camera low down off her port bow, with her cable out and smoke rolling away from her after funnels. Four funnels, two masts with prominent fighting tops and a long high sided hull mark her out as one of the largest cruisers of her day, her 6 inch guns set in casemates in two tiers amidships. A handful of her ship's company stand on the forecastle, a small craft lies off her stern and a low pier runs along the horizon.
She and her sister Terrible were built as an answer to the big, fast Russian cruisers of the 1890s, given great length and speed to run them down, and were among the largest cruisers in the world when they appeared; she was launched on 24 July 1895 by the Duchess of Devonshire. Her landing parties fought ashore in the Second Boer War, serving through the Siege of Ladysmith. By the date of this photograph she was flagship on the Australia Station, a post she held from 1905 until 1912, and in August 1908 she was on hand for the Australian visit of the United States Great White Fleet. She was reclassified as a boys' training ship at Devonport in August 1912, renamed Impregnable I in November 1919 and sold for breaking up in August 1929.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
