HMS Protector A173 Ice Patrol Vessel August 2021 Photo Print
HMS Protector (A173), a Royal Navy ice patrol vessel, sails from Plymouth on 10 August 2021, bound south for her first Antarctic season since 2019. The photograph is taken from low on the water off her starboard bow, with a stone quay wall, dockyard sheds and a wooded bank behind her and a small launch lying close inshore. Cloud sits low and grey over the harbour, white water breaks along her waterline, and the yellow cranes on her after working deck stand clear above the red hull.
She was completed in 2001, her hull built in Lithuania and her fitting out done at Leirvik in Norway, and spent her first years as the polar research and subsea support vessel MV Polarbjorn, a name meaning polar bear. The Ministry of Defence took her on charter in 2011 as a stand in for HMS Endurance, which had been disabled by serious flooding in 2008, and bought her outright in September 2013. Much of 2020 had been spent at Middlesbrough on the most thorough refit of her career, which is why this departure marked a return to the ice after two seasons away.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
