HMS Saracen P247 S Class Submarine Photo Print
HMS Saracen (P247), a Royal Navy S Class submarine, is running on the surface of the River Mersey in July 1942, viewed from a little above and ahead of her starboard bow as she heads towards the right of the frame. Rows of free flooding holes line her casing and bow, the jumping wire runs from the periscope standards down to the stem, and a low wash breaks along her hull. Behind her the far bank is crowded with dock sheds, a gantry crane and a smoking factory chimney under a pale, hazy sky.
Saracen was built by Cammell Laird at Birkenhead, launched on 16 February 1942 and commissioned at the end of June, only weeks before this photograph was taken. Within days of sailing on her first war patrol she torpedoed and sank the German submarine U-335 north of Shetland on 3 August 1942, and only one of the forty four men aboard the U-boat was rescued. She then joined the 10th Submarine Flotilla at Malta and later the 8th at Algiers, and was lost off Bastia in Corsica on 14 August 1943, when depth charges from Italian corvettes forced her to the surface and her ship's company scuttled her; forty six of her forty eight men were picked up and taken prisoner.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
