HMS Sardonyx H26 S Class Destroyer 1933 Photo Print
HMS Sardonyx (H26), a Royal Navy S Class destroyer, is under way in 1933, viewed from abreast of her port side with her stem heading left and her pennant number painted large and pale on the hull. A group of sailors stands on the forecastle forward of the bridge, flag hoists fly from the foremast yard and the White Ensign streams out aft, while part of another vessel shows at the left hand edge of the picture. The sky is heavy and overcast, and she is pushing up only a modest bow wave.
Sardonyx was built by Alexander Stephen and Sons at Linthouse on the Clyde, laid down in March 1918 and launched on 27 May 1919, too late for the First World War, and she went into the Reserve Fleet after completion. She was brought forward briefly in November 1925 to search for the lost submarine M1, and after recommissioning at Portsmouth in August 1931 she joined her sister Sabre in January 1932 in the search for another missing submarine, M2. In the Second World War she was converted for anti-submarine escort work and spent most of it on Atlantic convoys, escorting troop ships for the Normandy landings in June 1944, before being handed over for breaking up at Inverkeithing in June 1945.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
