HMS Speaker D90 Ruler Class Escort Carrier May 1944 Photo Print
HMS Speaker (D90), a Royal Navy Ruler Class escort carrier, lies off Greenock on 19th May 1944, seen broadside from her port side with a cable running from her bow down to a buoy. Her hull and island are painted in bold, angular disruptive camouflage, and she sits on calm water with low hills and a grey, clouded sky behind her.
She was built at Tacoma, Washington, as the intended American escort carrier Delgada and commissioned into the Royal Navy under Lend-Lease in November 1943. Shortly after this photograph she was converted at Dundee to an assault carrier, and in 1945 she joined the British Pacific Fleet, where her Hellcats of 1840 Squadron flew combat air patrols over the fleet off Okinawa. She entered Tokyo Bay on 30th August 1945, ahead of the Japanese surrender, and then spent the following weeks carrying liberated prisoners of war away from Japan. She was returned to the US Navy in July 1946 and later sailed as the merchant ship Lancero.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
