HMS Spider 1887 Grasshopper Class Torpedo Gunboat 1888 Photo Print
HMS Spider (1887), a Royal Navy Grasshopper Class torpedo gunboat, lying stopped in flat calm water, dressed overall with a line of signal flags running from her bow over both masts to the stern, circa 1888. Her starboard side faces the camera, with her closely grouped twin funnels amidships, a ship's boat slung in davits aft and a small rowing boat alongside with a man at the oars. A pale, hazy sky merges with the horizon behind her low, dark hull.
Spider was laid down at Devonport Dockyard on 9 June 1886, launched on 17 October 1887 and completed in December 1888, one of three Grasshopper Class torpedo gunboats built to hunt down enemy torpedo boats. Displacing 525 tons, she had twin screws driven by triple expansion engines and carried a 4 inch gun, six 3 pounders and 14 inch torpedo tubes. She spent a year training engineering students and took part in the 1896 Annual Manoeuvres before paying off in November 1896, and was sold at Malta for breaking up on 13 May 1903.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
