HMS Swale K217 River Class Frigate February 1943 Photo Print
HMS Swale (K217), a River Class frigate, lies almost broadside on to the camera on 4 February 1943, showing her starboard side in a disruptive camouflage scheme of pale and darker panels. A few of her crew stand right forward on the forecastle, her single funnel and tall mast rise amidships, and depth charge gear crowds her quarterdeck aft. The sea is slight under a grey, overcast sky.
Swale was built by Smiths Dock at South Bank-on-Tees, launched on 16 January 1942 and commissioned on 24 June 1942. Within weeks of this photograph she was with Escort Group B5 guarding convoy SC 122, and on 17 May 1943, escorting convoy ONS 7 off Cape Farewell, she sank U-657. She sank a second U-boat, U-302, north-west of the Azores on 6 April 1944 while guarding convoy SC 156, and at the end of the war she was lent to the South African Navy, returning in January 1946 and serving the Royal Navy until 1955.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
