HMS Swordfish 61S S Class Submarine 1932 to 1939 Photo Print
HMS Swordfish (61S), a Royal Navy S Class submarine, lies stopped on a choppy, wind-rippled sea in this interwar black and white photograph, taken at some point between 1932 and 1939 and described in the listing as off Weymouth. She is seen side-on from her starboard side, with 61S painted large on her conning tower, her 3 inch gun trained forward and small flags flying from staffs at bow and stern. Other warships sit low on the horizon at either edge of the frame.
Swordfish was laid down at Chatham Dockyard on 1 December 1930, launched on 10 November 1931 and commissioned on 28 November 1932, the name ship of the first group of the S Class. These were compact boats intended for the shallower, more confined waters of the North Sea and Mediterranean, and by the outbreak of war she was serving with the 2nd Submarine Flotilla. Her end remained a mystery for more than forty years: she sailed from Portsmouth on 7 November 1940 and did not return, and it was 1983 before a local diver found her wreck about 12 miles south of St Catherine's Point, Isle of Wight, broken in two by a mine. The site is now protected under the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986.
