HMS Vindex D15 Nairana Class Escort Carrier November 1943 Photo Print
HMS Vindex (D15), a Royal Navy Nairana Class escort carrier, lies alongside at Swan Hunter’s yard on the Tyne on 26th November 1943, newly completed and a week away from commissioning. She is seen from the river off her starboard side, her hull and island in angular disruptive camouflage, with the yard’s cranes rising behind her flight deck and a tall steel gantry on the left of the picture.
She was laid down in July 1942 as a refrigerated cargo ship for the Port Line and completed instead as one of only a handful of British-built escort carriers. In 1944 her Swordfish took part in the sinking of four U-boats in the Atlantic and on the Arctic convoys to Russia, where she also served as flagship of a convoy escort. In 1945 she joined the British Pacific Fleet, and after the war she carried liberated prisoners of war home from the Far East. Returned to the Port Line in 1947, she finally became the cargo ship Port Vindex she had been meant to be, and sailed between Britain and Australia until she was broken up in 1971.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
