RAF 230 Squadron Sunderland N9029 Greek Islands c1941 Photo Print
Short Sunderland Mk I N9029, a Royal Air Force four-engined flying boat of 230 Squadron’s detachment at Scaramanga, flies low over the sea among the Greek islands, seen from slightly above and off her starboard bow. Her four propellers are turning and her starboard wing float hangs below the wing, while rocky islets lie on a calm, hazy sea. The edge of the photographer’s own aircraft frames the left of the picture.
230 Squadron was formed at Felixstowe in August 1918 and took delivery of its first Sunderland in June 1938, flying the type for almost twenty years. It moved to the Mediterranean in May 1940 to fly reconnaissance for the fleet, with a detachment at Scaramanga near Athens from December 1940 to April 1941. According to the Imperial War Museum, it was from this aircraft that Flight Lieutenant A Lywood reported the Italian fleet movements of 27th to 28th March 1941 that led to the Royal Navy’s victory at the Battle of Cape Matapan. Weeks later the squadron’s Sunderlands helped evacuate troops and refugees from Greece.
This print is ideal for 230 Squadron and RAF veterans, Coastal Command and flying boat families, and anyone with an interest in the Battle of Cape Matapan.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
Your order will be crafted by award-winning framing technicians based in central England, with decades of combined experience. Using the finest FUJI professional photographic papers and premium materials, they ensure exceptional print and frame quality.
Our hand-picked craftsmen and women work with state-of-the-art printing and cutting equipment, yet every frame is still assembled by hand and subject to rigorous quality checks. Their dedication consistently results in outstanding work, appreciated by many returning customers.
