RAF 30 Squadron Westland Wapiti IIA J9404 Diana Iraq c1932 Photo Print
Westland Wapiti Mk IIA J9404, a Royal Air Force general-purpose biplane of 30 Squadron, stands on the grass at the landing ground at Diana in northern Iraq, seen from her starboard bow with small bombs carried on racks beneath the lower wing. Her Bristol Jupiter radial engine, two-blade propeller and the roundel under her upper wing all show clearly, with more of the squadron’s Wapitis lined up behind her, a row of tall trees to the left and bare hills rising beyond the field.
J9404 was flown by Flight Lieutenant Gerard Combe when he commanded 30 Squadron’s ‘A’ Flight, and he took this photograph himself; he later rose to Air Vice-Marshal. 30 Squadron had been formed for service in Egypt in 1914 and spent almost twenty years policing Iraq. It replaced its DH.9As with Wapitis in 1929. In 1932, when the Iraqi Army moved against Sheikh Ahmed of Barzan in northern Kurdistan, 30 Squadron’s Wapitis flew reconnaissance and attack sorties from Diana in support of the columns. That flying saw aircraft hit by ground fire and an observer killed. The squadron flies today as an RAF transport squadron.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
