RAF 31 Squadron Tornado GR4 Kandahar Farewell November 2014 Photo Print
A Royal Air Force Tornado GR4 of 31 Squadron sits head-on at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, on 11 November 2014, as a ground crew member stands on the yellow taxi line before it with both arms held straight out to the sides. It was the morning the last RAF Tornados left Afghanistan, bringing to an end more than five years of Tornado operations there. The canopy is raised above the cockpit, the wings are spread wide with large fuel tanks slung beneath them, and the marshaller, in tan overalls, ear defenders and a hi-vis belt, has her back to the camera under a clear blue sky.
31 Squadron was formed at Farnborough on 11 October 1915 as part of the Royal Flying Corps and claims to be the first military unit to fly in India, where it served until 1947. Known as the “Goldstars” after the star in its badge, it flew the Tornado from 1984, first at RAF Brüggen in West Germany and from 2001 at RAF Marham in Norfolk. The Tornado GR4 took over from the Harrier in Afghanistan in June 2009. The squadron disbanded on 14 March 2019 when the Tornado retired, and reformed at RAF Waddington in October 2023 to fly the Protector RG1.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
