RAF 31 Squadron Westland Wapitis North West Frontier c1931 Photo Print
Three Royal Air Force Westland Wapiti Mk IIA general-purpose biplanes of ‘X’ Flight, 31 Squadron, fly in close echelon over the bare mountains of the North West Frontier of India in the early 1930s, seen from above and off their port side. The nearest aircraft, coded K, with her serial on the fuselage and fin, and the next in line, J9512 coded L, both show their Bristol Jupiter radial engines, fuselage bands, rudder stripes and crews in the open cockpits, with steep ridges giving way to a wide plain below.
31 Squadron was formed at Farnborough on 11th October 1915 and reached Risalpur on the North West Frontier that December. Its motto, “In caelum indicum primus”, means first into Indian skies, after its claim to be the first military flying unit in India. After flying Bristol Fighters over Waziristan through the 1920s, it took delivery of Wapiti IIAs in February 1931. Designed at Westland’s Yeovil works to replace the DH.9A, the Wapiti first flew on 7th March 1927, and the all-metal IIA became the main production version, with 430 built. The Quetta earthquake of 1935 forced the squadron to move to Drigh Road in Karachi. In 1939 it exchanged its Wapitis for Valentia transports.
This print is ideal for 31 Squadron and RAF veterans, families with a connection to the RAF in India, and anyone with an interest in the RAF between the wars.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
Your order will be crafted by award-winning framing technicians based in central England, with decades of combined experience. Using the finest FUJI professional photographic papers and premium materials, they ensure exceptional print and frame quality.
Our hand-picked craftsmen and women work with state-of-the-art printing and cutting equipment, yet every frame is still assembled by hand and subject to rigorous quality checks. Their dedication consistently results in outstanding work, appreciated by many returning customers.
