RAF 33 Squadron Puma HC1 XW231 Howitzer Lift April 1987 Photo Print
Royal Air Force Puma HC1 XW231, code letters CM, of 33 Squadron lifts an M101 105mm howitzer on an underslung load at Westdown Camp, Tilshead, on Salisbury Plain on 24th April 1987, during the NATO Exercise Ardent Ground ‘87. She is seen side-on from her right in her camouflage scheme, with her cabin door slid open, the pilot visible at his side window and the squadron badge on her nose. Below her, the gun hangs from the strop amid drifting smoke and dust in front of a dark line of pine trees.
The exercise brought together gunners and airmen of NATO’s Allied Command Europe Mobile Force from seven nations, including the United Kingdom and the United States. No. 33 Squadron was formed on 12th January 1916 at Filton as part of the Royal Flying Corps, and re-formed at RAF Odiham on 14th June 1971 as the RAF’s first Puma squadron. It moved to RAF Benson in 1997, flew the Puma until the type was retired in March 2025, and was disbanded that October. Its motto is simply “Loyalty”. XW231 herself went on to wear full tiger stripes with 230 Squadron for the 2005 NATO Tiger Meet.
This print is ideal for 33 Squadron and RAF veterans, Royal Artillery gunners and anyone with a connection to the Puma or Salisbury Plain.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
Your order will be crafted by award-winning framing technicians based in central England, with decades of combined experience. Using the finest FUJI professional photographic papers and premium materials, they ensure exceptional print and frame quality.
Our hand-picked craftsmen and women work with state-of-the-art printing and cutting equipment, yet every frame is still assembled by hand and subject to rigorous quality checks. Their dedication consistently results in outstanding work, appreciated by many returning customers.
