RAF 47 Squadron Vickers Wellesley K7775 KU-N Eritrea 1941 Photo Print
Vickers Wellesley Mk I K7775, a Royal Air Force single-engined bomber of 47 Squadron flying from Agordat, heads out over the jagged hills of Eritrea on a sortie towards Keren in 1941, seen from her port side and slightly above. Her two bomb containers are slung beneath the wing and her fixed tailwheel hangs below the fin, while the front and rear cockpits sit along the slim fuselage, with ridge after ridge of bare rock fading into the haze below.
47 Squadron began bombing Italian airfields and bases in Eritrea and Ethiopia the day after Italy entered the war in June 1940. In early 1941 its Wellesleys flew repeatedly over Keren, where the Italian army held the mountain passes on the road to Asmara for almost two months, often meeting Fiat CR.42 fighters. Keren fell on 27th March 1941, and when Eritrea was taken the squadron moved on to Asmara. It took over the Wellesleys of 223 Squadron that April, becoming the last unit to fly the type over East Africa. It went on to fly Wellesleys on anti-submarine patrols off Egypt until September 1942.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
