RAF 95 Squadron Sunderland T9040 SE-E Freetown 1941 to 1942 Photo Print
Short Sunderland Mk I T9040, a Royal Air Force Coastal Command four-engined flying boat of 95 Squadron, lies at her mooring in Fourah Bay, Freetown, Sierra Leone, seen from her starboard side with a line running from her bow. Her SE-E codes and roundel show on the rear hull and her starboard wing float rests on the choppy water, with wooded hills rising behind the bay and a small boat moored off to the right.
95 Squadron was formed at Pembroke Dock on 16th January 1941 from part of 210 Squadron and arrived at Freetown that March to escort convoys and hunt U-boats off West Africa. T9040, built at Rochester in 1940, became known for “the long tow”. On 9th February 1942, while escorting convoy OS17, she was forced down in the Atlantic, and HMS Auricula (K12), a Royal Navy Flower Class corvette, took her in tow for some 74 hours and brought her safely back to Freetown. The squadron later moved to Jui and then to Bathurst in the Gambia, and flew Sunderlands over the South Atlantic until it disbanded in June 1945.
This print is ideal for 95 Squadron and Coastal Command veterans, flying boat crews and their families, and anyone with a connection to wartime Freetown.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
Your order will be crafted by award-winning framing technicians based in central England, with decades of combined experience. Using the finest FUJI professional photographic papers and premium materials, they ensure exceptional print and frame quality.
Our hand-picked craftsmen and women work with state-of-the-art printing and cutting equipment, yet every frame is still assembled by hand and subject to rigorous quality checks. Their dedication consistently results in outstanding work, appreciated by many returning customers.
