RAF Chinook Ramp Down FOB Shawqat Helmand July 2011 Photo Print
A Royal Air Force Chinook comes in to land at Forward Operating Base Shawqat in Helmand, Afghanistan, in July 2011, bringing in troops, post and supplies. It is seen from directly behind in an upright frame, its rear ramp lowered and a crewman in camouflage sitting on the edge with gloved hands resting on his knees. Both engines and the blurred blades of the rear rotor fill the top of the picture, the wheels hang down ready to touch, and the top of the base’s earth-filled barrier wall runs across the foreground under a pale blue sky.
The barrier walls that ring the base are Hesco Bastion units: collapsible wire-mesh cages lined with fabric that are filled with earth or rubble where they stand. They were invented by a British engineer, Jimi Heselden, whose Leeds company made them, and Camp Bastion itself took its name from them. For small, remote bases like Shawqat, ringed by such walls and often cut off by road, the Chinook was the main link to Bastion, bringing in stores and taking out casualties.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
