RAF Merlin Aircrewman in Doorway Ex Merlin Vortex 2009 Photo Print
A Royal Air Force crewman leans out of the open door of a Merlin helicopter to look down over the desert of southern California during Exercise Merlin Vortex in 2009, in training for the Merlin Force’s deployment to Afghanistan. He fills the right of the frame in a sand-coloured flying suit, helmet and gloves, held in by his harness, with a squadron badge on his sleeve. Below and beyond him the ground falls away into eroded ridges and dry gullies, running out to a line of blue mountains. A rotor blade sweeps through the sky above in a blur. The photograph was a winner in the 2010 RAF Photographic Competition.
On a support helicopter the crewman is the pilots’ eyes behind and below the aircraft. He leans out of the door to call them down the last few feet to the ground, watches the load on the hook, and keeps a lookout for threats. He also looks after the troops in the cabin. The Merlin, with three engines and able to fly by day or night in all weathers, gave the crews a powerful aircraft for that work, and Merlin Vortex let them practise it in desert heat and mountain terrain before Helmand.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
