RAF Supermarine Spiteful F XIV RB517 Port Side c1945 Photo Print
Supermarine Spiteful F XIV RB517, a Royal Air Force single-seat fighter developed as the Spitfire’s successor, stands on concrete hardstanding beside a grass airfield around 1945, seen side-on from her port side. Her camouflage, the light band around the rear fuselage, the fuselage roundel, her serial and the fin flash on her large fin all show crisply, with the Griffon engine’s exhaust stubs along the long nose, the five-blade propeller and the bubble canopy, and distant buildings and trees on the far side of the field.
The name took some time to settle. The Air Council considered both Victor and Valiant before Sir Charles Portal, the Chief of the Air Staff, suggested Spiteful, which was accepted in March 1944. Production aircraft with the Griffon 69 engine were rated at 483 mph, and RB518, the next aircraft off the line after this one, later reached 494 mph with a more powerful Griffon, a record for a British piston-engined aircraft. The Spiteful’s enlarged tail went on to be fitted to the last Spitfires and Seafires. Most of the Spitefuls themselves, however, had been sold for scrap by July 1948.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
