RAF Typhoon FR IB EK427 Kemble March 1945 Photo Print
Hawker Typhoon FR IB EK427, a Royal Air Force armed reconnaissance version of the Typhoon fighter-bomber, stands on the grass at 5 Maintenance Unit, Kemble, in Gloucestershire in March 1945, seen side-on from her starboard side. She wears wartime camouflage with the code letter S, her serial and a fin flash, and has the later sliding bubble canopy, with a Cotswold dry-stone wall and a line of trees behind her on a misty day.
The FR IB was developed in early 1944 to give the Second Tactical Air Force a fast tactical reconnaissance aircraft that could still fight. One of the Typhoon’s four 20mm cannon was taken out and replaced by three F24 cameras, one facing forward and two pointing down. Only a small number were converted, and most served with 268 Squadron from July 1944, but pilots never took to them. The vibration of the Sabre engine blurred many photographs, and the type was withdrawn in January 1945, shortly before this aircraft was photographed in storage at Kemble.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
