RAF 40 Squadron Vickers Wellington IC X9889 Gibraltar 1941 Photo Print
A Royal Air Force Vickers Wellington IC of 40 Squadron, serial X9889 and coded BL-D, stands under guard on the airfield at Gibraltar in 1941, with the sheer north face of the Rock rising behind it. A sentry stands in front of the wing while two more men wait by the nose. The bomber had stopped at Gibraltar on its way out to the squadron's new base at Luqa on Malta.
Gibraltar was the usual staging post for RAF aircraft flying out from Britain to Malta and the Middle East, and the airfield on the narrow isthmus below the Rock handled a steady stream of them. The Wellington's geodetic lattice frame, designed by Barnes Wallis, let it absorb heavy damage and still bring its crew home. X9889 did not survive long on Malta: it was one of three 40 Squadron Wellingtons destroyed when German aircraft raided Luqa on 29 December 1941.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
