Royal Navy Blackburn Skua Mk II Line Up Hatston Orkney c1942 Photo Print
Four Royal Navy Blackburn Skua Mk II fighter dive-bombers of the Fleet Air Arm stand in line on the airfield at Hatston, HMS Sparrowhawk, in Orkney, seen from their starboard bow in low light under a broken sky. Crews sit up in the open cockpits under the long glazed canopies, and ground crew stand at the propeller of the nearest aircraft as the line waits to take off.
The Skua was the Fleet Air Arm’s first all-metal monoplane and its first dive bomber, first flying on 9th February 1937 and reaching 800 Naval Air Squadron late in 1938. Early on 10th April 1940, sixteen Skuas of 800 and 803 Naval Air Squadrons took off from Hatston, led by Captain R.T. Partridge, Royal Marines, and Lieutenant W.P. Lucy, Royal Navy. They flew across the North Sea at the limit of their range and dive-bombed the German cruiser Königsberg in Bergen harbour. She sank, the first major warship ever sunk by air attack in war. The Skua was withdrawn from front-line service in 1941 and spent its last years towing targets and training crews until 1945.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
