Royal Navy Whirlwind HAS7 Helicopter USS Newport News 1966 Photo Print
A Royal Navy Westland Whirlwind HAS7 helicopter of the Fleet Air Arm sits on the wooden after deck of the American heavy cruiser USS Newport News (CA-148) during an exercise in the Norwegian Sea in 1966, seen from her port side in black and white with her crew in the cockpit and her cabin door open. She carries the number 042 on her fuselage, a 2 and a roundel on her nose and ROYAL NAVY on her tail boom, while mooring bitts and deck fittings fill the foreground, a sailor crouches at the left and open sea stretches away on the right.
The Whirlwind was Westland’s licence-built version of the Sikorsky S-55. The HAS7, powered by an Alvis Leonides Major piston engine, was the Fleet Air Arm’s first purpose-built anti-submarine helicopter when it reached the front line in 1957. By the mid-1960s the turbine-powered Wessex had taken over most front-line anti-submarine work, but Whirlwinds served on in search and rescue, training and utility flights until the type left Royal Navy service in 1977. USS Newport News, a Des Moines Class heavy cruiser commissioned in 1949, was the last all-gun heavy cruiser in the US Navy and served until 1975.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
