Dragonfly HR3 Royal Navy Helicopter Search and Rescue 1955 Photo Print
A Westland Dragonfly HR3 of the Royal Navy flies overhead against a pale, overcast sky in this black and white photograph from 1955. Her side code GJ 706, the words ROYAL NAVY and the roundel are painted on the fuselage and tail boom, the serial WG723 appears in small letters near the tail, and the main and tail rotors are blurred with speed.
The Dragonfly was the Westland-built version of the American Sikorsky S-51 and was among the first helicopters taken into Fleet Air Arm service in the early 1950s. The HR3 introduced all-metal rotor blades in place of the earlier wooden ones. Dragonflies flew as plane guards off aircraft carriers, standing by to pick ditched aircrew out of the sea, a job that had previously fallen to an escorting destroyer, and they also served at air stations on search and rescue duties.
This print is ideal for Fleet Air Arm veterans of the early helicopter era and anyone with an interest in Royal Navy search and rescue.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
