Six pre-production Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.1 aircraft are lined up at the manufacturer’s test facility at Dunsfold Aerodrome, Surrey, in 1968, as visitors inspect one of the most revolutionary aircraft of its era. The image captures a pivotal moment in British aviation history, showcasing the early development of the world’s first operational vertical/short take-off and landing (V/STOL) jet.
The Harrier GR.1 introduced a new dimension to air power, capable of operating from forward locations and austere airstrips. No. 1 Squadron became the first RAF unit to convert to the aircraft in April 1969 at RAF Wittering, marking the beginning of a long and distinguished service life that would see the Harrier deployed across multiple theatres and conflicts.
This print is ideal for RAF historians, aviation enthusiasts, and collectors of Cold War military aviation wall art.
