Built by Swan Hunter on the River Tyne, she was launched in 1981 and formally commissioned in 1985, following her sister ships HMS Invincible and HMS Illustrious. Throughout her service, Ark Royal played a central role in British naval aviation operations, supporting helicopter and Harrier jump jet deployments across multiple global operations before her decommissioning in 2011.
