HMS Bangor (M109) Royal Navy Sandown Class Minehunter is pictured off the key port of Tobruk, Libya during mine clearance operations in support of NATO forces. HMS Bangor and HMNS Vlaardigen were tasked with clearing a safe shipping lane into Tobruk, with this image capturing Bangor operating alone during the deployment. The photograph highlights the important role played by Royal Navy minehunters during operations off the Libyan coast in 2011.
HMS Bangor is a Sandown Class minehunter commissioned by the Royal Navy in 2000. Designed to hunt naval mines in depths of up to 200 metres using the Sonar 2093 Variable Depth Sonar (VDS), she is capable of conducting mine clearance operations throughout the continental shelf. HMS Bangor is named after the seaside city of Bangor in Northern Ireland and is the second Royal Navy vessel to bear the name.
