HMS Holland 1 Holland Class Submarine c1905 Photo Print
HMS Holland 1 (1901), a Royal Navy Holland Class submarine, runs on the surface at speed in this photograph from around 1905, with water breaking over her low hull. Her crew, in dark uniforms and caps, stand and sit on the narrow casing around the small superstructure and tall mast. Behind her, a low shoreline with buildings lies across choppy water under a grey, overcast sky.
Built by Vickers at Barrow-in-Furness to the American design of John Philip Holland, she was launched on 2 October 1901 and became the first submarine owned by the Royal Navy, the first of five Holland boats used to learn the new business of underwater warfare. She ran on a petrol engine on the surface and an electric motor when dived, carried a single torpedo tube and had a crew of about eight. Sold in 1913, she sank under tow on her way to the breakers, and was found off Plymouth in 1981, raised in 1982 and is now preserved at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
