HMS Orion 85 Leander Class Light Cruiser February 1942 Photo Print
HMS Orion (85), a Royal Navy Leander Class light cruiser, is under way on 20th February 1942 after completing repairs at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in California, seen from off her port bow with her ship’s company lining the rails along her forecastle and decks. Her twin forward turrets, single broad funnel and tall masts stand out in fresh grey paint against a pale sky, with low hills faint on the horizon behind her.
Built at Devonport Dockyard and commissioned in January 1934, she earned 13 battle honours, a total bettered only by HMS Warspite. She fought at Calabria and Cape Matapan, and on 29th May 1941, evacuating some 1,900 troops from Crete, she was bombed and so badly damaged that about 360 people died, including 100 soldiers, before she limped back to Alexandria at 12 knots. After temporary repairs at Simonstown she crossed to California for the rebuild that ended with this photo, and returned to fight off Sicily, Salerno and Anzio, in southern France and the Aegean, and at Normandy, where she fired the first shell of the bombardment. She was scrapped at Dalmuir in 1949.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
